Off to a great start in 2013, I wasn't quite ready... but perhaps better that way, a friend with a machining company asked me to look over a drawing that he was having trouble making. A two minute glance convinced me that this item was almost impossible for him to make. I suggested this perhaps might be a 1st draft prototype sketch but no it had been around years and was always troublesome...I visited the company and suggested they replace the complicated item with a cheap standard part...job done...sorted.
The same guy then introduced me to an individual with a good idea, but no reliable facility to transform it into a set of drawings for efficient manufacture...ideal for me...a full set of drawings in several sizes was created....helping my machinist friend no end...he was trying to build prototypes...everybody wins.
Then a previous company I had worked for asked me if I could help them out with some drawing work for 2-3 months. I willingly accepted and was there for 9 months. Whilst there I demonstrated the capabilities of 3D software which they subsequently purchased, and so I trained up the staff in it's use & methods. A personal project in the form of a vehicle adaption for disabled access was high on my priority list. Economically I couldn't find anyone else to do it, plus it is in frequent use so we can't be without it. This sounds straightforward but actually requires 63 bespoke subassemblies to be designed, made, fitted & coupled into a sequential operation to open and close the tailgate & ramp of a 2002 Renault Kangoo. I budgeted to work on this for 2 years. After completing these in time they now need to link together but a request to help out at a previous company, doing Aftersales work, for 2 months of work, becoming 14 months, before stopping for a bit of Kangoo project. 2018 was a funny year 2 company's requesting my services simultaniously...can't do both.....almost got neither....did a couple of months at one of them, although structural changes made it much more difficult than it used to be. Then after another couple of months on the Kangoo I was asked to help out at a company producing packaging machinery, new to me but interesting, enjoyable and challenging....I said I could do 6 months but actually did 7.5.....loved it ....great people.....great engineering...perfect.
